The Highlighters host Galva this Saturday at the Campbell Complex. Match time is noon; please try to come to the fields about 11:30. Steve and Jeff will be the coaches this week. Four of our 20 players will not be at the match, so those that can play will have lots of minutes on the pitch.
We had a spirited practice today, including a scrimmage in which coaches and parents participated. Lots of action–dribbing, saves by goalkeepers, wonderous shots to the back of the net, passes from the wing into the center for a teammate to score. The team is making some progress.

Catch the English Premier League match on ESPN2 after school today (April 11). Liverpool hosts Manchester City. The game starts at 2 pm, but you can see part of the second half before you do your homework.
Photo session and scrimmage (“friendly”) v Rock Island White at 5:30 Tuesday. The weather forecast is for fair skies.
Our next match is at noon (yay, we can sleep in) on Saturday, April 16, at Campbell Sports Complex versus Galva.
Here are some images from our early morning match at Moline on that puddly, cold field. The Highlighters came alive at last and poured in four goals while the defenders stepped up to shut down the opponents. Good times.
We chose Hornets as our team name yesterday. The players have learned a little about the formation that we’ll use and look ready to play. I think they enjoyed the last drill that we did, which had them alternately attacking and defending the goal.
The forecast for 9am Saturday is 41 degrees with a NW wind of 10 mph producing a windchill 0f 35, so dress warmly–both players and fans. Bring water and a small snack to eat between games. Try to get to the field by 8:40 at the latest; I’ll be there at 8:30.
If you’re up early, watch English soccer on ESPN2 at 6:30.
Our first two matches are on Saturday, April 2. Yes, we play two matches on opening day. The first match, against Rock Island White, is at 9 am (be there at 8:30). We play again at 10:30, against Moline 3. Should be fun, the weather will be slightly warmer, and we’ll all get to play a lot of minutes.
Please vote for a team name on the tab “Vote for Team Name” before this Thusday’s practice.
Review the videos when you have time. They are short and have some good information. Watch the video on passing to see a team of young players move the ball up the field to score.
